Rotarians are working internationally to ensure that children are immunized against polio and that surveillance is strong despite the poor infrastructure, extreme poverty, and civil strife of many countries. Since the PolioPlus program’s inception in 1985, more than two billion children have received the oral polio vaccine. The Foundation is now aiming to raise $200 million to match grants totalling $355 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Humanitarian Grants Programmes
Humanitarian Grants Programmes operated by the Foundation extend from Disaster Recovery currently for Hurricanes Stan and Wilma (Guatemala and Mexico), Hurricane Wilma (United States), the Earthquake in India and Pakistan, and Solidarity in South Asia, to Matching Grants, which support for districts’ and clubs’ international projects.
Rotary Foundation educational programmes include Ambassadorial Scholarships, one of the largest international scholarship programmes in the world, Group Studency Exchanges, which cover travel expenses for teams of non-Rotarians from a variety of professions who stay with Rotarian hosts, and Rotary Peace Fellowships, under which up to 100 fellows are sponsored to study at one of the six Rotary Peace Centres for a master’s-level degree or professional development certificate.
