Nyabyeya Needs our Hearts!

The Story

Our flagship peace project is known as "Nyabyeya needs our hearts". This project has its roots in the 2 million Polish people who suffered so badly (and most of whom died) at the hands of the Soviets in World War 2. The lucky ones joined the Polish army after being released in 1942 following the pact signed between Stalin and Sikorsky the Polish Prime Minister. Amongst them were women and children and some older men unable to fight, who were sent by the British colonial authorities to their colonies in Africa. A group of about 3.600 were sent to Nyabyeya in Uganda and sat out the war there.

The context

The Ugandan villagers welcomed them with open arms and helped them settle on a patch of land which was cut out from the jungle. There they remained from 1942 to 1948 before being sent to UK, Canada, Australia, South Africa etc. A few died of natural causes in the village and there graves are still there today.

The idea

We would like to thank the people of Nyabyeya whose parents and grandparents gave help to these refugees from war. They are in fact still helping refugees from war today – those from Sudan or the Congo. We wish to thank them by collecting funds to be used for training the young people of Nyabyeya in skills which they can use to improve life in the village and provide employment (youth unemployment is about 80%!). The skills needed include carpentry, hydraulics, electrical, bricklaying, building, tailoring, IT etc.

What you can do?

Your help is needed to achieve this ambitious project which through education and training brings peace and greater security to a poor village which does so much to help others. Even a small contribution would be very welcome. Once we have collected enough from clubs in Poland and other countries we will apply for a Rotary Foundation Global Grant. They will then match the sum collected with an equal amount.

After this we can start to recruit volunteers who will be sent to Uganda to train trainers who in turn will be able to teach the local youth.

These young people will be able to create workplaces for themselves and serve the local community. The objective is to give all the people of Nyabyeya a better life than the one they currently have.

Your kind donations may be transferred to the bank account of Rotary Club Warszawa Wilanow:
